The far reaching hand of the Nazi's even travelled to the south of Spain.
From what I have read, Spain was considered a neutral country during WWII. Hitler did try to entice the Spanish government, at the time, to attack Europe, including Gibraltar, from the West. But they did not do it. Instead they lessen the borders of France so thousands of fleeing Jews could get through.
As well, Jews especially Eastern European, primarily Hungarian Jews, were actually smuggled or given fake ID, taught basic Spanish, posing as Spaniards to get through the country of Spain. They were also given legal documents stating they had Spanish ancestry (which they did not have to prove). Which in turn could help them travel west to Portugal and out of Europe and the clutches of the Nazi's. Even though historically Jews had not been allowed to live in Spain for 4 centuries.... they helped them. Most of the Jews who fled to Spain, survived the Holocaust.
This monument below is found near the Port of Cadiz.
Basic translation is "to the Jews who left Cadiz in 1944."
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
