The Plaza of San Juan de Dios or the Mayor's Square has been the administrative and commercial centre in Cadiz since the 16th century.
Directly ahead is the Town Hall.
These tiny huts have many interesting and homemade items to purchase. They also have leather which is readily available everywhere in Cadiz. You will always find many, many cruisers here for it is right near the harbour and train station.
Never a dull moment in this square.
Stopping to have a wee cap and sweet.....and people watch in the square.
I have also started something new. I purchased a sketch pad and I have been drawing with pencils my scenic views throughout this 3 month trip. Starting in Copenhagen and continuing in Spain.
I never would suggest I am an artist or can even draw....but there is something very soothing, relaxing and cathartic in visualizing and trying to put it to paper.
The photo below is of a 'Palo Borracho' literally in Spanish means 'Drunken stick or tree.'
It has many names here in Cadiz, one also being a 'Silk Floss Tree.'
Irregardless of the names it is quite an interesting specimen? This tree is huge and the thorns you see on the trunk are quite intimidating as well.
It can reach heights of 25 meters and a girth of more than 2 meters around.
The green on the trunk is due to the high chlorophyll content.
The flowers on this tree are coming to their end but can be over 4-6 inches in diameter!
They are very similar to the Hibiscus flower except the thorns on the tree.
Ok so sometimes we have sweets or even gelato before dinner.
We stopped to try an assorted fried fish plate and the potato salad above has fish in it as well.
Not maybe our best meals, but ok and filled our bellies.
A very, very busy cafe near the Cadiz Cathedral. The fish was quite yummy but the 'chocos' or cuttle fish were not the best.
But we know where to go for those.......but that's another blog post.
