Another New Fruit to me: the Cherimoya

The Cherimoya fruit is readily available and in season now in Cadiz.  It is quite an unusual looking fruit.  I had no idea what it was actually when we saw it at the grocery store.  Lime greenish colour it doesn't necessarily look edible or tasty.  But it is.

The best way to eat this fruit is to refrigerate it, to keep it cold.  Cut it in half and eat the white flesh inside with a spoon.  This popular way to eat it has resulted in it's nickname, the 'ice cream fruit.'

It's health benefits are plentiful.  Very high in Vitamin C.  It helps lower the LDL or bad cholesterol.  It has chemical properties that also help with stress and depression.  Lots of fibre.
Apparently the result of eating this fruit can also help with the signs of aging.

It has such an interesting taste.  If you mix a pear, banana, mango, apple custard and maybe a peach together, mashed it with a fork, you might get the idea of what it tastes like.
I really love it.....BUT.....
I have also read the seeds and skin of the cherimoya fruit are toxic.  The seeds are used to make pesticides?  Yikes.
So.....do not eat the skin.....and take precaution to avoid swallowing any of the seeds.  They are dark black or brown and easily seen.

Another interesting fruit from Spain.
Who knew?
