Wandering the town of Cadiz with T&G

Everyday we can walk all over Cadiz and see something different each and every day.
Here the gals had just finished a yummy lunch on the La Caleta beach.

Walking the promenade and watching the fisherman Cadiz style.

The House of the Five Towers built in 1771.
Actually right around the corner from us.

This day we climbed the tower and the ramparts of the entrance to Cadiz.

Fun with the camera and a willing participant.

"I'm fixing my nest...bugger off paparazzi girl!"
How rude....

Casa de las Cuatro Torres or the House of the Four Towers.
Built between 1736 and 1745.
Members of parliament stayed here during the 'La Pepa' ( the 1812 Constitution) period.

Gorgeous flower in our park.

Heading to the Santa Maria beach for the morning and lunch.

Gail and Trudi with feet in the Atlantic Ocean.  Wow was it cold!!

.....but that doesn't bother LD.

Seafood Paella shared between three of us.
Spicy and full of fish....LOVE it.

You can walk this entire ocean side promenade.

I cannot get enough of the water.  Indeed I went under to my neck....froze my wee self...but it was so energizing and invigorating.....

A random part of a sculpture in the Plaza....carved right from the gigantic piece...amazing.

More adventures to come.

The Kittens of Cadiz....and Cute Puppies

We have found in many European cities and villages there are always so many stray kittens.  As a community, they feed them and water them.  They are definitely healthy sizes and a hit with the tourists.
Cadiz is no different.
As a matter of fact, these wee creatures have incredible views and safe habitat on the rocks built up very high on the Atlantic Ocean side of the city.

It is a bylaw in Cadiz that larger dogs have to be muzzled while in town walking....however not everyone follows this rule.
Unfortunately I witnessed a medium size dog attack the beautiful and gentle Muscovy Ducks at one of our favourite parks.  I checked back a week later and other than moving slower, they seem ok.

Little dogs....which are incredibly well trained and obedient....wait patiently for their owners who pop into stores in the city.
Here are some of our favourites.

It's Late November and Cadiz is Still Blooming

Incredible weather still in Cadiz.  Hardly any clouds in the sky...any day.
It has rained twice since we've been here.
The sun feels so wonderfully warm on your face and with a slight breeze, everyday, that keeps the heat down.  The temperature doesn't vary much and stays around the 20 - 23 C.
Recently we have worn only a light sweater because the narrow streets act as a 'wind tunnel' and it can be a wee bit nippy.
Nights are cool for sleeping.
But everyday it is sunny and enjoyable.
A few photos of this very green paradise.

A small breeze on this day!

Christmas Cake in Cadiz?

Over the last few weeks our wee town of Cadiz has begun to erect Christmas trees throughout the Plazas, and hang lights, and many other decorations to celebrate the coming season.
I had read that they make a delicious Christmas cake that I really wanted to try.
It's my favourite....I make it myself...but not going to happen this year....so I am on the hunt for a Cadiz Christmas Cake.

Yesterday we walked passed one of the bakeries that we often see on our travels and the window display was filled with these Christmas Cake sort of items?
Looks like it?  I'm going to go in and purchase the smallest one they have to try it.

Below is the one we asked to purchase but changed our minds pretty quick.
It costs 85 euros.....that is over $100. Canadian dollars???  Oh no.

The baker, in Spanish, conveyed that it is the very decorative one, but for 10 euros we could buy the non-decorative one?  Ok, I'm excited about this plan.

It looked like a pastry wrapping the goods inside.
Once I cut into it, I found a very sweet candied fruit filling.
I googled it to see what exactly is in it and this is what I found.

'Turron de Cadiz' is a traditional 'Cadiz bread.'
Mostly made of marzipan and candied fruit.
Cadiz has many bake shops that sell marzipan rolls as well as huge chunks of an assortment of candied fruits.  Back in the 1950's a pastry chef, decided to put them together and here it is still a huge seller in Cadiz many years later.
Interesting that there is also, in some recipes sweet potato in it?
I have to say, I love it.
.....and I am sure my dentist will too.

Lunch out in Cadiz

So Deb and I wanted to try out this restaurant about 10 steps from our door in Cadiz.
It was recommended by our host so we made a reservation and went in.

Wanting to try some of the local specialities but not really knowing how to cook them, I thought this would be the place....and it was.

Below is our appetizer which is Hake fish with roasted pimento peppers.
Hake fish is found in the deep waters of Cadiz but comes into the shallow waters at night.  It can be anywhere from 8-60 lbs in weight.  It is sold here in the Cadiz Fish Market fresh out of the water.
It is related to the cod and haddock family....Yummy.

A seafood ravioli that was quite tasty as well.
Can't get enough seafood here.

.......Taa Da......my most excellent seared Tuna steaks.
Oh my gosh....best fish ever.
This was my first taste of it in Cadiz, but I have now cooked it at home, fresh from the fish monger three times!!  Seasoned on each side with spices and olive oil, seared in a very hot pan for 90 seconds, each side and voila!!!!!
A wee bit rare for Deb so I cook hers separately and a little longer.
I love Cadiz for many things....but it is a seafood lovers dream here.

Reflecting On An Incredible Trip

I cannot comprehend that our incredible 3 months adventures in Europe have come to an end....for now. Back in Canada and the hustle and b...
