Oh my gosh…we were tired. We actually almost missed breakfast. But no worries. By the time we were off the ship it was still only 10:30am. Find the train and zip over to Rostock, Germany. Twenty minutes later we are smack dab in the middle of the Old Town. The Neuer Markt to be exact. Incredible coloured buildings surround us with St. Mary’s Church towering behind it.
I want to take a minute to realize that 30 years ago, I would not be standing here! This is within the formerly known Communist East Germany. We are behind the infamous ‘Iron Curtain?’ The town of Rostock was completely levelled during WWII because it had factories that built airplanes. It was rebuilt and the borders are open….and here we are….two Canucks from across the pond.
Where the tram drops us off, we are struck by the pink City Hall. No judgement. Somehow it fits.
First stop….a wander through this 14th Century St. Mary’s Church. Photos can never do justice to the decor of a ‘bejeweled’ place of worship. A Renaissance pulpit, and Baroque organ. A 1472 astronomical clock.
All the statues in this art piece look bored. Check them out.
Cappuccino at 'Alex's Cafe.'
An enjoyable walk from the Neuer Markt to Universary Square.
The famous Bratwurst dog....delicious.
The view down University Square. Gorgeous. This was our view at lunch.
Ok....but we have to try a German Cake?
Back to the Neuer Square and off by train to the Port of Warnemunde.
What a great morning in Rostock.
