Pinch me again as I cannot believe we are here. St. Petersburg, Russia for two days. Actually it ended being 3 because of weather....but it was awesome.
The iconic Russian Orthodox churches with the onion domes. They do not disappoint.
Fast facts about St. Petersburg.
It has 500 bridges. Many, many canals like Amsterdam. Nicknamed the "Venice of the North."
400 Palaces, belonging to nobles and royalty within this city.
After the Revolution, the people lived in them.
Only 60 days a year of sun. Cloudy, rainy or snow otherwise. And cold!
Here we begin our tours of St. Petersburg. An hour boat ride through the canals of the city.
Most of these huge buildings were palaces before the Revolution.
This palace was built as a safe place for the Czar (at the time) who believed he was unsafe and would be executed if he stayed in one of the bigger palaces. Unfortunately, he was still assassinated in his bed by his own security officers?
A Naval Officer strolling with his partner.
Our tour guide said the reason for the bright colours is because of the greyness of the city....weather wise. So it was meant to brighten up the city.
This small building in comparison to the rest was one of the palaces of Peter The Great. He was the first Czar and actually frugal with his money. This is very modest and simple in design.
It was his daughter Elizabeth who was much more of a spender. Catherine's Palace is her home.
The photos of that palace will follow a little later.
