The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and designed by Sergey Malyutin who was a folk crafts painter. The traditional or Russian name for them are Matryoshka dolls.
I purchased my first Matryoshka doll in Sopron, Hungary on a visit there about four years ago.
These artisans are painting the dolls in a souvenir shop in St. Petersburg, Russia.
This place was HUGE.
Modern artists create many new styles of nesting dolls. Common themes include floral, Christmas, Easter, religious, animal collections, portraits and caricatures of famous politicians, musicians, athletes, astronauts, "robots," and popular movie stars.
Thousands of dolls...starting at 1 Euro to well over 900 Euro?
How to decide????
But I did....
I'm taking this one home with me. I might need a new suitcase?
